AB OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze the trend of
HIV-infection in Ukrainian population. METHODS: From 1987 to 1993 blood
samples were taken from more than 32 million Ukrainian's for testing of
HIV 1/2 antibodies by ELISA. Seropositive samples were subjected to WB
for confirmation. RESULTS: In accordance with statistic data from June
1987 to December 1993 there were 153 HIV seropositive Ukraine
citizens--an increase of 41 persons over the last year. Of these cases
69% were aged between 20 and 39 years. The male-to-female ratio of cases
was changed from 0.8:1 in 1988 to 1.4:1 in 1993. Cumulative rates of
HIV-infection per million population increase from 3.3 (1989) to 5.7
(1993). HIV transmission mode structure remains the same as during the
last years. Patients infected through heterosexual contact consist 57.5%
and homosexual contact--9.8%; 9.8% of all persons were infected during
medical manipulations; 6.5% of all cases were children infected from
their mothers; in 16.4% the mode of HIV transmission was still
undetermined. 22 HIV-infected patients had diagnoses of AIDS, 13 of them
died, including 4 infants. CONCLUSION: Increase of the detected
HIV-infected persons doesn't give us the optimistic grounds concerning
AIDS prevalence in Ukraine. Low data of sickness statistics in
comparison with other countries could not calm us, because they does't
       reflect the real epidemiological situation.
