AB OBJECTIVE: To detect peculiarities of clinical manifestations and course
of syphilis in HIV-infected patients. METHODS: In 63 patiens (female 3,
       male 60, aged 17-52; 2--primary, 33--secondary, 22--early latent,
6--late latent syphilis) the diagnosis of HIV infection was confirmed
with ELISA and Western blot and of syphilis on basis of detection of T.
       pallidum, express-method, complement linkage reaction, FTA-abs, FTA-200,
immobilization reaction in blood and CSF and clinical examinations and
when necessary histological studies. RESULTS: Chancre was found in 3
patients: in 1--erosive (in the fold of ani), in 1--phagedenic (in the
right angle of the mouth) and in 1--gangrenous (in the back lesion of
vagina). The secondary syphilids were distinguished by rich dark red
colour, hemorages and petechias; 9 such patients had psoriasiform
papules, 1--flat nodules. In the latter (woman) in the course of time
Kaposi sarcoma developed. The areas of specific alopecia in 1 patient
was up to 5 cm in D. Wassermann reaction often was false-negative, CSF
examinations clearly showed early involvement of nervous system in
syphilis. CONCLUSION: Syphilis in combination with HIV-infection is
distinguished with more rapid course, clear vessel component in
secondary syphilis, unusual clinical features and early asymptomatic
       involvement of nervous system.
