AB OBJECTIVE: To study oral pathology in pediatric HIV+ patients (pts).
       METHODS: We studied 211 HIV+ pts. (CDC P0, P1, P2) between march 1991
and december 1993. Median follow was of 9 months. CD4 counts was
performed by flow cytometry. Oral cavity evaluation was performed by a
dentist, trained in stomathology. RESULTS: Oral pathology (OP) was
diagnosed in 3 P0 pts, in 5 children who seroreverted, in 2 P1 and 38
P2. In 3 cases out of the latter oesophageal candidiasis was also
diagnosed in pts with low CD4 counts (corrected for age). We also
diagnosed in pts with normal CD4 counts: angular cheilitis 1 pt,
parotiditis 5 cases, erythematous candidiasis 5 cases. With low CD4
counts (corrected for age) we diagnosed: 22 Pseudomembranous candidiasis
(PC) and 1 recurrent aphtous ulcers. All P2 cases had previously
diagnosed other AIDS-associated diseases. CONCLUSIONS: Oral pathology
was diagnosed in 60% of P2 pts and in 5.4% of P0 and serorreverted pts
(p < 0.0000). PC was the most frequently oral patohology diagnosed. PC
was not an early diagnostic marker in our series, and it was associated
with low CD4 counts and P2 stage.
