 AB OBJECTIVES: Detecting and following of HIV infected children-major
       paediatric problem in Romania. METHODS: 1) HIV testing (Elisa method) of
       the children having major or/and minor WHO criteria of AIDS and with one
       or multiple blood/blood compounds transfusions, admitted in our Clinic;
       2) Epidemiologic study in HIV positive children (by WB test); 3)
       Clinical, immunological, virusological and bacteriological following
       correlated with the infection stage using CDC criterias. RESULTS: 1)
       From 2150 tested children 77 (3.58%) were HIV infected. From 74
       haemophiliacs none were HIV positive; 2) At the diagnostic time we found
       the following stages of infection: P0 = 1, P1 = 3, P2A323, P2A+ one of
       the subgroups B, C, D, F = 50; Short asymptomatic stage--about 2 yrs 4)
       14 died with surviving period of 6mo from the moment of HIV
       confirmation; 5) Unknown way of transmission in 57.1% of cases, 11.68%
       having an historical ground of blood/compounds transfusions, 23.3% got
       im gammaglobuline and 2.59% with vertical transmission. CONCLUSIONS: 1)
       High rate of HIV infected children in the studied group, altogether with
       the lack of infection in haemophiliacs; 2) 54.5% are regularly followed,
       52.4% of them having no evolution; 3) For a better evaluation an
       enlarged study is required.
