AB OBJECTIVE: To compare hematologic abnormalities in HIV nonvertically
infected children, a group who were not and a group who were cared for
in a special AIDS hospital. METHODS: The first group of 88 children from
orphanages were examined in autumn 1990, when first admitted in the
Unit. The second group, examined in spring 1993 consisted of the 91
children cared for during more than 1 year in the Unit. Data also
studied were: nutritional status, treatment (no zidovudine was given),
stage of disease, social history. RESULTS: In first group, anemia
(prevalence 75.8%) was 80.3% microcytic, 48.4% hypochromic. In second
group, anemia (prevalence 80.2%) was 44.6% microcytic, 23.4%
hypochromic. Leukocytes were higher than the normal average for the age
groups in 70.4% of children of children in first group compared to 46.7%
of those in second group. CONCLUSIONS: Improvement of nutritional
status, prevention and management of secondary infections and also
progression of disease modified the range of hematologic abnormalities.
