AB OBJECTIVE: As in hemophilia, african children suffering of sickle cell
anemia are exposed to HIV infection because of regular blood
transfusions. The aim of this study is to determinate the seroprevalence
and clinico-biological manifestations of this disease. METHODS: 256
children with sickle cell anemia and aged less than 12 years were
followed (127 girls and 129 boys). The HIV test was made according to
the criterias of CDC (1989). Clinical and biological manifestations were
also determined. No HIV test was made to the parents. RESULTS: In this
group, only 14 children were HIV positive (5.5%) with severe clinical
manifestations and critical biological disturbances especially by a
significative falling of T4 lymphocytes. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION:
About the HIV infection transmission to the studied children, we can
rise the role of numerous blood transfusions because no certitude of
materno-foetal transmission is made. Appropriate preventive measures are
urgent for reducing seroprevalence of this disease.
