AB OBJECTIVE: to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of SeroCard HIV1
(SC1) and SeroCard HIV1/2 antibody test (SC1/2) (Trinity Biotech,
Dublin, Ireland). METHODS: SC1 was used in 90 subjects; 36 were done in
blind, 26 in HIV1+, 20 in healthy controls and 8 in subjects with
undetermined ELISA. We used fresh whole blood. SC1/2 was used in 42
subjects; 14 were done in blind, 15 in HIV1+, 5 in black race HIV2+
subjects, 8 in healthy controls; 27 were done using sera, 15 using fresh
whole blood. Contemporarly we performed ELISA test and WB. RESULTS: SC1:
no false positive or negative result was observed. Among blind tests we
saw 6 positive results, confirmed in ELISA and WB. All the 8
undetermined ELISA subjects resulted HIV1-for SC1 and WB.SC1/2: no false
positive or negative result was observed. Among blind tests we saw 3
positive results confirmed in ELISA and WB. All the 5 HIV2+ subjects
resulted positive for SC1/2 and negative for SC1. The total time require
to perform the tests is about 7 minutes. CONCLUSION: SC1 and SC1/2 are
useful kits for the rapid screening of subjects at risk for HIV1/2 in
emergency departments, infectious diseases departments, prisons, etc.
