AB OBJECTIVE: We have developed a combination-type gelatin particle
agglutination assay (HIV 1/2combi.) for the detection of HIV-1 and HIV-2
antibodies using recombinant antigens. Antibodies to HIV-1 and/or HIV-2
were detected at 1:32 final dilution of samples. METHOD: Three different
antigens were mixed and co-coated on gelatin particles. Sensitized
particles were evaluated for their potential in a screening kit. To
determine the sensitivity and specificity of HIV 1/2 combi., 178 HIV-1
and/or HIV-2 positive specimens, and 7600 blood donors samples were
tested. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The sensitivity of HIV 1/2combi. was
100% for HIV-1 and HIV-2 positive specimens, and was higher than other
kits using BBI's HIV-1 seroconversion panels. The specificity of our kit
was 99.85% for the blood donor samples. Further studies are still needed
to improve the specificity of HIV 1/2combi. Using HIV 1/2combi., the
detection of HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies is accurate, rapid and easily
       performed.
