AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a Western blot (WB) system for detecting HIV-2
antibodies. METHOD: 226 serum samples were studied, 7 of them were HIV-2
positives, 53 from blood donors, 10 positive to Chagas Disease, 1
positive to malaria. 9 with anti DNA antibodies from patients with
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and 11 with HLA antibodies. Besides,
135 HIV-1 positive samples were evaluated, 75 of them were from Uganda
patients and 60 from a known panel belonging to the AIDS Reference
Laboratory. All samples were tested by the Western blot system DAVIH
blot II following the instructions indicated by the manufacturers.
RESULTS: All the positive samples were correctly identified by the
DAVIH-blot II system. There were 6 indeterminates within the blood
donors group and 2 indeterminates from the anti HLA group. The positive
samples with the HIV-2 antigens showed a 91% of cross-reactivity being
predominant the reactions to the p26 (70%) and the gp36 (56%).
CONCLUSIONS: DAVIH blot II system showed to be highly sensitive in
detecting all the positive samples to HIV-2, and the specificity
coincided with the previously results given by HIV-1 WB in low risk
population. On the other hand, it was not identified any HIV-1
seropositive as reactive to HIV-2, that is why it is useful to
       distinguish HIV-1 and HIV-2 positives.
