AB We analysed the data from 20727 samples in 1992, 1993 regarding the
prevalence of HIV positive individuals in voluntary donors. A
retrospective analysis of the donors population was done with regard to
the age, sex distribution. The donors were screened for antibody to HIV
1 & 2 using Abbott recombinant HIV 1 & 2 by Enzyme Immuno Assay. Among
the 20727 donors the male & female ratio was 18209/2518 (7.2/1). The
population of voluntary donors to replacement donors was 14446/6281
(2.29/1). The numbers of HIV positive cases screened using EIA was 27
out of 20727 donors given an incidence of 0.13%. All the cases were from
replacement donors and none was from voluntary donors. The screening of
blood donors for HIV antibody involved random sampling of a donor
population. The incidence of HIV positive cases was very low. The
patients who had received whole blood or it's components from our blood
bank have not been reported positive for HIV.
