AB OBJECTIVE: To develop a cheap, simple and secure strategy for the
detection of anti-HIV antibodies in saliva samples. MATERIAL AND
METHODS: To collect the samples we used filter paper strips S.S.
903(USA). They were placed between gums and checked for about 10 minutes
and then dried at room temperature for 4 hours, and the samples were
sent to the reference Laboratory. As positive control (External control)
we used papers with saliva samples of patients who were positive for HIV
infections with confirmatory test (LIA TEK ORGANON), also we used the
controls of the commercial kit (Internal Controls). From the filters
papers with sample we took 5mm diameter disk and soaked in 200-300
microliters of working buffer solution for about 14 hours, taking 10
microliters of this solution as samples without additional dilutions and
working as the makers instructions (Vironostika, ORGANONN). RESULTS: We
found 2 reactive samples in 850 studied samples by the ELISA technic, to
confirming our findings we took serum of these patients, and used the
confirmatory test LIA-TEK (ORGANON). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest
that it is possible to use this technique allowing developing countries
such as Bolivia to extend the epidemiological survey in a secure and
       cheap way.
