AB OBJECTIVE: To treat a patient with seriously advanced AIDS by promoting
the host defenses. PATIENT: A 27-year-old woman (170 cm height, 50 kg
weight; could not walk unaided) was diagnosed as having serious AIDS
       (Western blotting, gp160(+), gp110/120(+), gp41(+), p68(+), p51(+),
p24(+)) with swallow pain, food intolerance etc., and her CD4 value was
a low as 0.7% (3.3)/ml, and the prognosis was considered very poor.
TREATMENT METHODS: The following agents were administered: A herbal
medicine, Juzen-taiho-to (7.5 g/day), which is reported to promote the
phagocytic activity of macrophage, the cytotoxic T cell activity and the
       production of g-interferon and IL-2; an H2-blocker, famotidine (40
mg/day), to inactivate suppressor T cells; Diclofenac sodium, Voltaren
(50 mg/day), to inhibit the production of prostaglandin which is
reported to activate suppressor T cells. After 20 days, zidovudine (500
mg/day), and Alfalfa Tabs (Shaklee Co., USA; 30 tablets/day) which
contains alfalfa powder, dextrin, fructose, Purloin, perfume, and in
particular, selenium were also administered. RESULTS: On day 3, the
level of CD4 positive cells was 0.7%/ml. Her swallow pain improved on
day 6. Abnormalities in the oral cavity disappeared and the rales in the
chest had decreased on day 8. On day 13, her weight increased to 54 kg,
and her physical condition was good. On day 18, the level of CD4
positive cells continued to be 0.7%/ml. On day 20, her general condition
showed a marked improvement, and from the day Alfalfa Tabs and
zidovudine were also administered. On day 22, she was in a good general
condition and her weight was recovered to 57 kg. On day 27, CD4 positive
cells showed a level of 3.5%/ml. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The
patient's symptoms remarkably improved and the percentage of CD4
positive cells increased five-fold by the current treatment within a
month. Administration of the agents with the health food product might
be a good treatment for patients with advanced AIDS.
