AB OBJECTIVE: Ocular disorders have been noted in patients infected with
HIV and are one of the most serious complications in AIDS patients.
However, the ocular features of HIV-seropositive patients have not been
well documented in Japan, we investigated the ocular manifestations in
       70 HIV-seropositive patients. METHODS: Seventy HIV-seropositive patients
(including 5 foreign patients) underwent ophthalmic examinations
consisting of visual acuity testing, slit-lamp microscopy and indirect
ophthalmoscopy between October 1989 and September 1992. Based on the
cumulative totals, 25 of the cases had AIDS, 18 had ARC, and 36 were
asymptomatic carriers (AC). RESULTS: Eighty percent of the AIDS cases
had ocular manifestations, including cotton-wool spots (52%), retinal
hemorrhages (56%), cytomegalovirus retinitis (40%) and pupil
abnormalities (16%). The ocular signs were also seen in 72% of the ARC
cases and 36% of the AC cases. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: In Japanese
HIV patients, it was appeared that ocular manifestations were also as
common as in Western HIV patients. It is important to carry out a
routine series of ophthalmic examinations for the early diagnosis and
       treatment.
