AB OBJECTIVE: In our multicenter study 61 patients 89 Eyes with active
disease or scarred CMV retinitis were studied. We studied the rate of
retinal detachment and the role of Laser photocoagulation in CMV
retinitis. METHODS: Ten 10 patients who developed retinal detachment in
one eye received prophylactic laser photocoagulation in the Fellow Eye.
Eight (8) patients received laser treatment during the healing phase and
two (2) during the active phase because they developed a limited
traction retinal detachment. RESULTS: Only one (1) of the eight (8)
patients who received prophylactic Laser photocoagulation developed
retinal detachment after 16 months of follow up. Both of the patients
with the limited traction retinal detachment who received laser
photocoagulation developed total retinal detachment. CONCLUSIONS:
Prophylactic Laser photocoagulation may play a roll in prevention of
retinal detachment if given during the healing phase of the disease.
