AB OBJECTIVE. Evaluation of routine ophthalmological investigations in CDC
stage IV HIV + patients admitted to the Infections Diseases Unit of our
hospital, without ophthalmological signs or symptoms. To show the
relationship between the ocular pathology found and the cause of
hospital admission. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Between April 1992 and
December 1993 routine fundus examination under mydriasis was performed
on 145 patients (a total of 259 examinations). RESULTS. The commonest
causes of admission were fever (29.3%), respiratory symptoms (13.49%)
and constitutional syndrome (12.7%). Ocular pathology was found in 46.7%
of the patients, of these, 72.13% had non-infections retinal
microangiopathy and 22.95% infectious pathology. Thirteen cases of CMV
retinitis, five cases of ARN and four cases of tuberculous choroiditis
were diagnosed, only the latter 4 patients showed signs of related
systemic pathology (disseminated miliary tuberculosis). The extra
workload involved was two hours per week. CONCLUSIONS. In view of the
minimal workload involved, and the necessity of early treatment of eye
infections in AIDS patients for the conservation of vision, we consider
that routine ophthalmological examination is extremely valuable.
