 AB OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the main injuries observed in upper digestive
       tract endoscopy in patients infected with HIV, histopathologic changes
       and infectious agents found in the biopsy samples. METHODS: A
       retrospective analysis on one hundred endoscopies from 83 patients who
       were infected with HIV and followed in the Infectious Diseases Division
       at the State University of Campinas during the year 1993. The mean age
       of the studied population was 34 (18-68) years being that 68 (81,9%)
       were men and 15 (18,1%) were women. The risk factors for HIV infection
       were: IVDU-29 (34,9%); promiscuous heterosexual -13 (15,6%); homosexual
       - 10 (12,0%); sexual contact with HIV+ - 10 (12,0%); bisexual - 06
       (7,2%); IVDU/bisexual - 04 (4,8%); IVDU/homosexual - 01 (1,2%);
       hemophiliac - 01 (1,2%). Nine cases had no information about risk
       factors. RESULTS: Eighty (96,38%) patients reported previous or
       concomitant disease at the time of endoscopy: moniliasis - 54 (67,5%);
       tuberculosis - 29 (36,2%); Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia - 21 (26,2%);
       herpetic infection - 21 (26,2%); toxoplasmosis - 16 (20,0%); hairy
       leucoplasia - 13 (15,6%); cytomegalovirus - 11 (13,7%); cryptococcosis -
       08 (10%); syphilis - 06 (7,5%); isosporiasis - 05 (6,2%); Kaposi's
       sarcoma 05 (6,2%). Sixty one (73,4%) patients reported gastrointestinal
       symptoms; epigastric pain - 29 (47,5%); diarrhea - 23 (37,1%); pyrosis -
       18 (29,5%); vomit - 16 (26,2%); substernal pain - 14 (23%); nausea and
       dysphagia - 13 (21,3%). Gastrointestinal tract symptoms, fever, loss of
       weight and Kaposi's sarcoma staging determined the performance of the
       upper digestive tract endoscopy. Moniliasis - 39 (39%); cellular changes
       of HPV - 25 (25%), cytomegalovirus - 09 (9%); H. pylori - 08 (8%);
       cryptosporidiosis - 04 (4%); mycobacteria - 04 (4%); Kaposi's sarcoma -
       03 (3%) and HSV - 01 (1%) were the diagnosis more frequently found.
       DISCUSSION: Endoscopic findings for moniliasis, HPV and CMV were
       confirmed by histopathologic tests. Only four cases of Mycobacteria
       infection were detected by means of culture test (few number of samples
       for performing this test). It is important realize endoscopies in these
       cases: discover new diagnostics and to confirm them.
