AB OBJECTIVE: To record the prevalence of oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS
in South Africa which has not been previously recorded and note ethnic
differences. METHODS: Two hundred consecutive HIV/AIDS patient of
varying ethnic origin presenting at a specialised clinic were studied.
Oral and perioral examination was carried out and data recorded on WHO
recording forms. CD4 counts suspected mode of transmission, etc. noted.
RESULTS: Three quarters of total sample had clinically obvious oral
lesions. Candidiasis most commonly seen statistically more Africans than
Whites were free of the oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS (p value =
0,0000). Angular cheilitis and hairy leukoplakia was statistically more
common in Whites. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Indications are that
ethnic origin may influence the appearance of the oral manifestations of
       HIV/AIDS.
