AB OBJECTIVE: To monitor and estimate the prevalence of HIV infections
particularly among sexually risk groups in Korea with year. METHODS: HIV
antibody tests had been performed on possible HIV risk groups in Korea
during the period of 1985 to January 1994. Target populations of the
surveillance were homosexual men, spouses of HIV infected persons,
female prostitutes, hospitality girls, seafarers, prisoners,
hotel/restaurant workers and foreign laborers etc. Total numbers of
tested sera during the study period were 5,312,000 mainly collected by
public laboratories RESULTS: New findings of seroconverters in seafarers
had been maintained in similar numbers since 1990 with the peak of 25.
This is presumably caused by repeated tests on limited numbers of the
population. Two female prostitutes had been found infected since 1993,
while not an infected prostitute was found during the period of 1989 to
1992. Annual findings of HIV infected entertainment employee increased 6
of 1992 to 12 of 1993. There were no significant differences in the rate
of seroconverters among homosexual men, spouses of HIV infected men and
blood recipients etc. with year in 1990's. HIV seroprevalence rates per
100,000 sera tested in 1993 were 333.27 of foreign laborers, 57.44 of
outpatients, 8.21 of female prostitutes, 6.92 of seafarers and 5.44 of
accommodation workers, compared with 0.71 of blood donors. DISCUSSION
AND CONCLUSIONS: With the data shown above, there is a possibility that
there would be an increasing HIV epidemic among sexual risk groups in
       Korea in the near future.
