AB OBJECTIVE: To increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS and STDs among clients
of prostitutes. METHOD: Approached potential clients of prostitutes
through an organized street campaign consisting of street theatre, one
person shows, corner meetings and poster exhibitions. Humour is used in
all activities. When possible performances take place within the
vicinity of local quacks selling STD treatment. The themes center around
human sexuality along with safer sex. After performances, trained
animator talk with men about health care seeking behaviour and provide
address of STD clinic run by the project. RESULTS: Approximately 10% of
those who watch the performance attend the STD clinic for treatment.
After performances, many men pose questions on sex and sexuality and
were markedly more interested in STDs than in AIDS. DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSIONS: The street campaign allows the project to address clients
in an anonymous fashion. The street campaign created an atmosphere
conducive for discussing sexuality; which is a prerequisite to
discussing safer sex, STD and AIDS. The existence of a STD clinic in the
area supports the programme and allows for concrete action on the part
       of the potential clients.
