AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of STDs in antenatal clinic. METHOD:
Vaginal swabs and blood were collected from ANC attendees at Mnazi mmoja
referal hospital between Jan-Dec 1993. Thayer and Martin agar was used
for the isolation of N.gonorrhoea, EIAs for HIV antibody detection and
TPHA for syphilis. RESULTS: A total 567 specimens were collected. The
mean age was 27 yrs. 13 (2.3%) of all attenders were HIV positive. The
distribution of STDs are as follows: N.gonorrhoea 15 (2.6%) and syphilis
4 (0.7%). The relative risk (R.R) of HIV seroprevalence in ANC attendees
when compared to patients attending STD clinic was 0.4. CONCLUSION: An
increase of HIV prevalence in ANC attendees has been found compared to
the previous findings of 0.7%. MCH/FP and AIDs/STD intervention and
control of AIDs/STD in MCH clinics, PHC units and PHC Centres.
