AB 1176 sera from the patients with the different forms of haemoblastosis,
blood donors, people from Chernobyl-region, patients with haemophilia
were studied in 1993. The presence of antibodies to HTLV-I in sera was
determined by indirect ELISA on the basis of natural viral antigen and
was confirmed by Western blot Du Pont and in ELISA-test on the basis of
synthetic peptides. 15 sera with the positive results were revealed. The
positive results were confirmed by Western blot in 4 cases from blood
donors (3 sera contained the antibodies to p19 gag protein; 1--to p24
gag protein, and 4--to gp46 env protein). 3 sera were negative and 8
sera were uncertain (they contained antibodies only to gag
       proteins--p19, p24, p26, p28, p53 in different combinations). So the
percentage of seropositive sera makes up approximately 0.34%. It is
necessary to note that carefully selected sera were used for the studies
that probably explains rather high percentage of infection.
