AB HTLV-I infection has been recognized as endemic in Japan, the Caribbean
and recently in Colombia and Peru. The Japanese migration to Peru
started more than 100 years ago and there is an important colony of
Japanese descendants in Lima. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rate of
infection by HTLV-I in healthy people of exclusively Japanese
ascendency, coming to the Peruvian-Japanese Medical Center. METHODS: The
cases were ELISA and WB positive. All of them gave their Informed
Consent. The population was distributed according to several criteria.
RESULTS: Four hundred and eleven persons were studied. Four of them had
positive ELISA tests plus an indetermined WB, and were excluded; 23/407
(5.65%) were both Elisa and WB positive, 19/280 (6.8%) women and 4/127
       (3.1%) men. Distribution: By Age: 0/91 (< 40 years), 5/135 (40-59
       years), 12/160 (60-79 years) and 6/21 (> 80 years) were positive; the
difference was significant. By generation: migrants from Japan 13/81
(16%); first generation (Japanese parents) 10/247 (4.0%); second
generation (Japanese grandparents) 0/88 (p < 0.05). By place of origen
       in Japan: Okinawa 20/213 (9.4%); elsewhere 3/198 (1.5%), p < 0.05.
CONCLUSION: HTLV-I infection occurs in nikkei population, basically in
those born in Okinawa. In the nisei and san-sei population, the rate of
       infection is progressively less.
