AB OBJECTIVE: To present etiologic pathogens of pulmonary infections in
adult ARC/AIDS patients who were seen at Srinagarind hospital, tertiary
care center in the Northeast of Thailand. METHOD: Data records of adult
ARC/AIDS patients with respiratory symptoms and/or pulmonary infiltrate
between February 1992-February 1994 were reviewed. The diagnosis was
made by the results of examination of expectorated sputum, BAL fluid,
brushing specimens and clinical response to specific chemotherapy.
RESULT: One hundred and three episodes of pulmonary infections occured
in 88 adult ARC/AIDS patients. Respiratory symptoms and chest x-ray
abnormalities were found about 90 and 92 percent respectively. No chest
x-ray patterns were specific to any organisms. The definite organisms
were found as the following; tuberculosis (37.1%), P. carinii (23.8%),
cryptococcois (15.2%), etc. Extrapulmonary infections were common in
pulmonary tuberculosis, and cryptococcosis. Coinfections were found
about 10 percent especially PCP and cryptococcosis. CONCLUSION:
Tuberculosis, P. carinii and cryptococcosis were common causes of
pulmonary infections in the Northeast that correlate with frequency of
common infections ARC/AIDS patients in Thailand. Extrapulmonary
involvement and coinfections were common and careful investigation
       should be done.
