SETTING UP THE US ROBOTICS v.34 SPORTSTER by Dan Dalrymple

Since there doesn't seem to be a lot of "setups" out on the big bbs'
for the USR Sportster 28,8 v.34 modems here's my 2 cents worth...

This is the text of an email sent to a friend of mine who operates
one of the oldest BBSs in our area. He uses a 14,4 v.32bis modem (I
don't know what kind) and wanted to know how I had set-up my USR
external Sportster v.34 28,800 modem. There is not much on the bbs'
about setting these modems up so here is my contribution. I hope that
this file can help someone else set their USR v.34 up. I don't claim
to have this modem set-up perfectly, but this seems to be the best so
far and I'm really happy with this modem. I don't operate my own bbs
so I use this modem only for calling into other bbs'. Accepting calls
from others may or may not work with these settings. I would apprec-
iate hearing from anyone who can improve on my settins here, since
I too am interested in getting "all there is" out of this great modem.
Thanks, Dan Dalrymple, 5751 S. Honeytown Rd, Wooster OH 44691. I am
on ExecPC about 3 or 4 times a week and also am "Go2Erie" on AOL.
I have been a member of CompuServe for 8 years but seldom log on...
My work phone is 216-698-6403 or home number is 216-698-3186. Please
let me know if I left something out or if you can improve on these
settings. Here's my e-mail to my friend John:

Hi John,
I'm using my registered version of Qmodem v4.2F for a com program
and basically first use the closest "Quick modem setup" that I find
to my v.34 Sportster which happens to be the "Quick" modem setup for
a Sportster 14,4 v.32bis. All that I change after setting my Qmodem
up as a 14,4 Sportster is the init string and I enable the 16550 UART
on the com port since this modem is external. My new init string for
my USR Sportster 28,8 v.34 is: ATS27=128&A0&B1&H1&R2&K3X3 <return>
(in Qmodem the return is ^M) By the way, I don't have a 16550 UART
installed in my system yet, but I set Qmodem up for one anyhow. I
never d/l'd any bad zips yet but I run Qmodem directly in DOS 6.22
and not through Windows. My UART is just a 16450 but my machine is
fairly fast being a ISA bus 486-50 and the com ports are set for my
system's maximum of 9600. I'm getting downloads of ZIP files at
22-2600cps and TXT files at 5-6000cps depending on how "loose" they
are. I'll write that INIT string into my modem's nram after I think
that it's perfected...

Here is an ati6 after our last connect, you can see that we DID
connect at 14,400 even though my connect message showed only 9600.

Anyhow, the modem seems to be working well now. It logs to about every
modem that I've tried. My connect message always shows a 9600 baud
"connect" no matter what speed I really connect at.

There is not much avilable on the big boards yet as to how to set this
modem up. As you can see, the ROM is only dated 11/30/94 which was only
a couple of months back. I'll probably u/l this file to ExecPC to try to
help new owners of this modem set it up. I really like this modem. It is
external and I don't even have the 16550 UART on the comm port. I have
never d/l'd a bad file yet but I don't run my com program through
Windows. For a comm program, I use a registered copy of Qmodem v4.2F,
running in DOS 6.22 on a 486-50 ISA bus machine.

My phone lines out here "in the boonies" are not the greatest, to say
the least. This USR Sportster 28,800 v.34 is doing better than any
modem that I have ever owned at cleaning them up... I've owned a
"bunch of 'em" My first was an external 300 baud screamer on a Sanyo
555 clone.
