          OPERATING INFORMATION AND TIPS

          POSSIBLE SOFTWARE AND MEMORY CONFLICTS

If you have Microsoft WINDOWS installed, you should be able
to run SCAN from WINDOWS. See the file named WINDOWS for
information on how to do that.

If you have memory resident programs that are used to run
specialized hardware or specialized 'pop up' software, they
may keep SCAN from running. Nothing is wrong with your machine.
But, if they utilize memory that SCAN needs, SCAN won't run.

          START UP:

To start the SCAN system if you are somewhere on the C drive,
          just type and enter: scan.

To start the SCAN system from somewhere on another drive,
          type and enter: c:\scan.

In both cases, the computer will check the C:\ directory, for
the SCAN.BAT file that was added there by the install routine.
That file has a single command (\scan\scan), which tells the
computer go to the \SCAN directory and start SCAN.EXE.

You also can start SCAN from any place by typing and entering:
          c:\scan\scan.

          THE MAIN MENU:

When you start the SCAN system, you get the following Menu:

                              S C A N M E N U

                              a - LOOK at DIR
                              b - Change DIR
                              c - Copy Files
                              d - Delete files
                              e - Change Drive
                              x - Exit

The current drive and directory will be displayed on the lower
left of the screen, and h = Help will show on the lower right.

SELECT: a - LOOK at DIR

If you select: a, you will get a list of the current directory
          files in alphabetical order.

A highlight bar will appear in the upper left of the screen to
assist you in scanning the directory and selecting files or a
new directory to go to. You also will get menu prompt lines at
the top and bottom of the screen.

The top menu line prompts you to use the arrow keys to move the
highlight bar around the screen to highlight a file or a directory,
and then press the Enter key to select it.

The bottom menu prompt line is as follows:

      x=exit  t-top  m=middle  b=bottom  PgDn  PgUp  c=change DIR  d=delete

You can use the highlight bar as just mentioned to change to a new
directory, or you can press the option key c. You will get a small
window box for entering the name of a new directory to scan. The
directories shown on the current directory listing will be only
the directories that are immediately below the current directory.

If you press the t, b, or m keys, you will move to the top,
bottom, or middle of the directory listings.

          x = Exit.

The d = delete key can be used to mark files for deletion when
          you exit the directory.

When you highlight a file and press Enter, the file contents will
be displayed. Only text files will be displayed in text form.
Other types of files, if selected, may display as symbols.

Because some software packages have files that are critical to
the operation of the software, all files to be scanned are first
copied to the C:\SCAN directory. Then they are brought into a
scanning file for review or printing. The original file will not
be altered. However, if you select the delete option, the
original file will be deleted as you wish. The scanning file
is emptied out after each use to conserve disk space.

When you scan a file, menu prompt lines and option keys will be
displayed. Most of the keys are similar to those just mentioned.

There is one added option however. It is e=edit. A small text
file editor is included for editing small files such as BAT files
and CONFIG.SYS files, or short notes and letters. If a file is
to big to edit, the message: "File is to big to edit" will appear.

There also is a print option (p=print) which will get you a print
of the file. And there is a slightly different delete option.

If you press: d for delete, you will get one "yes / no" chance to
change your mind. If you press y, the file will be deleted
immediately. If you press any other key, no change will occur.

Before you clean up a file cluttered directory with SCAN, it
is a good idea to copy all of the directory files to a floppy
disk for possible later use. After some time has gone by, then
reuse the disk to hold a new batch of "old" files.

          SELECT: b - Change DIR

If you select: b, you will get a small window box for entering
          the new directory name.

You can change to any directory on the current drive. To change
to a directory on a different drive, you must first use main menu
option: d, and enter a new drive letter.

When entering the name of a directory just type in its name if
it is directly below the current directory. If you are in the
\SMITH directory and want to change to the directory named
\SMITH\JONES, just type: jones, and press the Enter key. You
can type and enter the full path and directory name if you wish.
Type: c:\smith\jones, and press the Enter key.

If you are in the \SMITH\JONES directory and you want to return
to the \SMITH directory, just type: .. and press the Enter key.
          This is a DOS shortcut.

If the directory that you want to change to is not directly
above or below the current directory: enter its path and name,
and press the enter key. Don't enter the change directory
command (cd), or the drive letter. If you want to move to the
\SCAN directory and you are in the \SMITH directory, just type
          and enter: \scan.

You have to put in the \ as the first entry, so the computer will
look for the SCAN directory on a different path that starts at the
main or root directory (the \ directory). Without the \, the
computer will look for the SCAN directory on the \SMITH path and
          it won't find it.

          SELECT: c - Copy files

If you select: c, you can mark files, and then copy them to
another directory or drive. You also can copy one file to
          another.

          SELECT: d - Delete Files

If you select: d, you will be able to mark many files quickly
for deletion. If you highlight a file and press the d key to
mark it for deletion, the letter D will appear in front of the
file name. All marked files will be deleted at the same time
when you return to the main menu. You will not have to respond
y or n each time you mark a file for deletion.

You can blank out any of the d's used to mark files for deletion
before you return to the main menu. Also, you will get a chance
to change your mind about deleting the marked files when you
          return to the Main Menu.

          SELECT: e - Change Drive

If you select: e, you will get a small window box for entering a
drive letter. If you enter a or b, you will have to put a disk
in drive a or b, or you will get stuck. If that happens, press
Ctrl-Break, Escape, or Ctrl-Alt-Del to warm boot your computer.

This briefly covers the operations of SCAN. We sincerely hope
that you find it to be helpful and a time saver.

Thank you for your interest and support.
