AB This book is intended to provide an overview of the management of
patients suffering from primary tumors of the nervous system and from
the metastatic and nonmetastatic neurological complications of systemic
cancer, and to assist physicians dealing with those problems. An
international roster of 33 contributing authors have put together a wide
ranging book organized into four sections and an epilogue. The first
section deals with the epidemiology of neuro-oncological disease, the
interaction between the nervous system and neuro-oncological processes,
imaging techniques and immunological aspects. The second section
discusses the neuropathology, clinical diagnosis and management, and
when known the underlying genetic abnormalities, of primary tumors of
the brain and spinal cord, the cranial and spinal nerve roots and the
leptomeninges, but excludes pituitary adenomas. In the third section,
central nervous system metastases are discussed, including surgical
management, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Disease is considered by
metastatic site and by the nature of the primary--solid or hematologic.
The fourth section deals with nonmetastatic complications, both side
effects of therapy and the paraneoplastic syndromes associated with the
primary disease. The special problems of the AIDS patient are also
discussed in this section. Finally, in the epilogue, the editors review
the role of the neurologist in management of these problems.
