AB The history and the goals of the Dutch Voluntary Euthanasia Society
(NVVE) are described, as well as the different ways the NVVE tries to
reach these goals: social acceptation and legalization of euthanasia and
physician assisted suicide. Special attention is given to the work of
the Members Aid Service (MAS), consisting of 50 volunteers who act as
counsellors and as patient-advocates for members who ask for help and
understanding. Some cases will be presented to show what happens after a
request is made, what people are involved, where all the players fit
into the process leading to euthanasia (or to other decisions). These
cases will include some HIV/AIDS patients. Differences between the
HIV/AIDS patient and the classical euthanasia-case will be analysed.
Some statistics are presented on HIV/AIDS patients in the Netherlands,
mortality and medical decisions around the end of their lives. Finally
the problem is discussed that arises when patients and doctors differ on
       the notion of unbearable suffering.
