AB Since January 1991, 1900 people have accessed Sexual Health and AIDS
Service (SHAIDS) in Lismore NSW for sexual health/HIV disease screening
and or management. SHAIDS services an area containing one base hospital
and ten smaller hospitals. This presentation will trace the development
of a unique rural service and will highlight the role played by nurses.
Nurses conduct clinics at the main centre and four outreach venues. All
the professional staff have a wider role in education and consultancy,
with a focus on the mainstreaming of HIV disease.
