AB Many opportunistic infections manifesting as disease in the severely
immunodeficient are reactivations of previous, dormant infection.
Several forms of chemoprophylaxis have been shown to give a high level
of protection against reactivation. In situations where opportunistic
infections can occur de novo, simple lifestyle changes may be
protective. This paper gives an overview of current prophylaxis
strategies, including chemoprophylaxis and defensive lifestyles.
