AB The four Health Districts of Macquarie, Orana, Castlereagh and Far West
serve an approximate total population of 150,000 and cover 43% of the
state of New South Wales. Prior to 1993 these four districts were
one--the Orana Far West Region. HIV/STD Services have been provided in
varying degrees within these Districts since the late 1980's. Specialist
Medical Clinics are provided on a regular weekly basis in Dubbo
(Macquarie) and monthly in Walgett (Orana). Other communities such as
Broken Hill (Far West) and Mudgee (Castlereagh) have specialist
counsellors/nurses to provide serology testing and referral services.
The specialist health care workers are small in numbers and often placed
in professionally and geographically isolated locations. The remoteness,
diversity and small size of communities that require clinical services
raises unique issues that confront these specialists. These issues
include distance and time of travel, inappropriateness of local health
facilities, specific needs of Aboriginal people and problems of service
promotion and accessibility. This photo collage shows the diversity of
locations and health care worker activities involved in the delivery of
       HIV/STD Services to Western N.S.W.
