AB This presentation discusses the development of palliative care services
for people with HIV/AIDS. It looks at how existing formal and informal
service structures have adapted to the needs of this group; whether this
adaptation has been adequate and appropriate; and the social, political,
philosophical and economic factors involved in this ongoing process.
This process is examined at both the macro and micro level of service
delivery. It concludes with discussion of some current issues and how
they illustrate the interaction of these factors in the development of
services: AIDS dementia care, euthanasia, participation in trials in
end-stage disease (particularly for conditions where cognitive capacity
impaired), provision of AIDS palliative care in rural areas, and the
provision of hostel and nursing home-type services.
