AB A Commonwealth AIDS Workforce Information, Standards and Exchange
(CAWISE) Program grant was obtained to develop a resource manual for
nurses to assist with the management of people with severe HIV
disease/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Upon review of the
literature the formulation of nursing care standards was seen as an
appropriate framework for developing a manual that would provide
information to assist in formulating a plan of nursing management. This
framework also enables a systematic monitoring and evaluation of that
care against predefined, documented criteria. Twenty five standards have
been developed, encompassing total care activities/interventions.
Whenever possible the standards have been developed using a patient
focus and each has an expected client outcome. The processes for
achieving outcomes are listed. Rationale and references are provided for
each standards, where applicable. Appendices include a sample evaluation
form which may be used to evaluate nursing care. Users of the manual are
advised to adapt these standards for their own environment as they have
been developed in a centre which provides highly specialised care. A
shortcoming of the manual is that standards have not been developed for
paediatric or obstetric management. The challenge for developing these
has been left to those nurse with this specific expertise. Copies of the
manual are currently available free of charge from the authors.
