AB In 1994, the AIDS Council of NSW undertook the production of a booklet
on euthanasia. This was in response to two needs: the need for people
wishing to choose euthanasia to have easily accessible information on
how to make such a decision and on the likely consequences of their
actions; and the need for practitioners in the care and support sectors
for clear information on their legal and ethical positions in relation
to euthanasia, and for ways to discuss the issue with clients. This
paper looks at the process of developing the booklet and what light that
sheds on the silence around the issue--why we are silent, and the
consequences of silence. Paul Van Reyk (B. Social Studies) has been an
educator and policy writer in HIV/AIDS for seven years, and is the
author of Doing it Ourselves. A guide to caring for people with HIV at
       home.
