AB OBJECTIVE: To document exposure to HIV in cases of newly diagnosed HIV
infection for which exposure had been attributed by the patient to
sources other than sex between men. METHODS: Cases of HIV infection,
newly diagnosed in Australia since January 1994 for which exposure to
HIV had been attributed to sources other than sex between men were
included in the study sample. The doctor who diagnosed HIV infection was
requested to complete the study questionnaire, which sought information
on the patient's and the patient's sexual partners sexual and drug use
history, as appropriate. RESULTS: During the interval 1 January-30 June
1994, 34% (159/463) of cases of newly diagnosed HIV infection were
attributed to sources other than sex between men. Exposure to HIV had
not been reported for 71% of these cases and was given as heterosexual
contact or injecting drug use for 19% and 10% of cases, respectively. By
30 June 1994 approximately 70 questionnaires had been forwarded to the
diagnosing doctors or were administered by counsellors. DISCUSSION:
Responses to the questionnaire will indicate the extent to which patient
reported exposure to HIV is corroborated by standardised history-taking.
