I once released a program that had about 60 files in it, and specific
instructions in 2 different places throughout the documentation that
told the end user to create a subdirectory, and move all files with
a certain naming convention to that subdirectory.

The program as written would still run, but not as intended if the end
user didn't move these file. I had assumed that these users had good
experience with their computers, because the program was meant
specifically for the sysop of a BBS.

Well, after calling around to the local BBS's, about 1 in 10 sysops
never read the documentation, they just unzipped the program, expecting
it to work as is. Needless to say, the program did not work.

Why do you need an installation program?
               ========================================

I think the above experience gives the best reason. Even experienced
users don't read the documentation. They just copy the program to
a subdirectory, test it, and if it doesn't work the first time, they
either delete the program, or call your support line.

You want to be able to check the users system, to insure your program
will work before its installed. This is especially true in checking
video modes, and available disk space.

You want to make sure your users see important instructions, or features
  of your program.

You may want to execute your program, immediatly after installation.

Why do you want to use Interactive Install?
              ===========================================

There are many features that are comparible to commercial installation
  programs available.

Decompress feature! This could save you in both disks used to install
  your program and mailing costs.

Your registration fee is good for all minor upgrades, and a substantial
  discount on any major upgrades!

No runtime or royalty fees! You may release as many different programs
or as many copies of the same program you want. (Sorry, ARQ.EXE may
not be distributed with your program without a written agreement from
  DC Micro Development)

Unlimited technical support direct from the author!

The price! Interactive Install registration fee is $39, compare that to
PC Install *(tm) that costs $99 as of May 1995. If you want the
decompression features of PC Install, the price is $149. Every shareware
product I've seen runs about $45 and none of them had decompression
  capabilities.

You don't want to write an installation program yourself! Unless you
plan on taking as much care into writing a flexible install program,
as you did with your latest work.

  * PC Install is a trademark of 20/20 Software.
