TP 570 - Installing Windows NT 4.0 and its device drivers

This document describes the installation procedures for Windows NT Workstation Version 4.0 and its device drivers.

Overall procedure
1 Have the Windows NT installation package in hand.
2 Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
3 Install Windows NT.

You will require the following drivers for this procedure:

Installing Microsoft Windows NT
Before installing Windows NT, do the following:
Read the Windows NT installation guide.

1 Insert the Windows NT CD-ROM into the external CD-ROM drive.
2 Go to the CD-ROM drive; then go to the \I386 directory. For example, if your CD-ROM drive letter is D, go to D:\I386
3 At the command prompt, type WINNT and press Enter.
For example, D:\I386>WINNT
Follow the instructions on the screen.
If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, use a network server, you can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server. After connecting your computer to a network, such as with the DOS LAN requester, you can install the files from the network server to your computer at the DOS command prompt.

Notes for installing the PC Card support software
If you are installing Service Pack 4, you should install it before you install the PC Card support software. If you have already installed Service Pack 4, you need to reinstall the PC Card support software.
If you are going to use a Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature with your computer, do the following:

1. If your system is connected to a network, log off before starting the installation.
2. You need to uninstall PC Card support software (CardWizard).
3. Dock your computer to the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature.
4. If you want to install the Windows NT Service Pack, install it before you install the PC Card support software.
5. Reinstall the PC Card support software.

ThinkPad Configuration program installation

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0.
  2. Logon with administrative privilege.
  3. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk by running the file. To do this, you can select Start->Run and specify the path and filename of the file you downloaded, or you can double-click on the file in Windows Explorer. This will extract the drivers.
  4. Click on Start -> Run...
  5. Specify the installation program SETUP.EXE with full path you extracted in the step 3 and click on OK. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\UTILITY\
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.


Note: When prompted for target directory during installation, only a short name can be specified for a target directory, e.g. C:\THINKPAD. Do NOT specify a directory name with spaces, e.g. "C:\IBM ThinkPad\".

Display driver installation

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0. Logon with administrative privilege.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on the Display icon.
  5. Select on the Settings tab.
  6. Click on the Display Type... button.
  7. Click on the Change... button.
  8. Click on the Have Disk... button.
  9. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\DISPLAY\. Then click on OK button. Then driver list appears.
  10. Windows NT finds 'NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV' then click on the OK button.
  11. Click on the Yes button to confirm that you are installing a third-party driver.
  12. Click on the OK button when you are prompted to restart.
  13. Click on the Close button to close the Display Type window.
  14. Click on the Close button to close the Display Properties wndow.
  15. Click on the Yes button and restart the computer to make the driver effective.
  16. Click on the OK button, when the 'Invalid Display Settings' message appears.
  17. 'Display Properties' window appears. Select your screen parameter from the color palette, desktop area, and refresh frequency.
  18. Click on the Test button and make sure the selected mode is displayed correctly on the screen.
  19. Click on the OK button in the 'Display Properties' window.


PC Card support software installation

  1. Insert the Software Selections CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Software Selections main window appears.
  2. Click Install Software.
  3. Click the View All radio button above the Program Name list window.
  4. All the device drivers and other programs in the Software Selections CD are listed.
  5. Select the check box of the device drivers and programs that you want to install. PC Card support software.
  6. Click the Install button at the bottom right of the window, and follow the instructions on the screen.


Audio device driver installation

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0.
  2. Logon with administrative privilege.
  3. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  4. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  5. Double-click on the Multimedia icon in the Control panel. The Multimedia Properties window appears.
  6. Click on the Devices tab and then on the Add button.
  7. Select Unlisted or Updated Drivers, and press OK button.
  8. A dialog box appears and prompting for the path of the drivers to be installed. Enter in the location you extracted the files to and click on the OK button. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\AUDIO\
  9. In the driver list window that appears, select the SoundFusion(TM) Audio device and click on OK. Windows NT may report that the driver files are already present in the system. In this case, select Audio Devices -> Audio for SoundFusion(TM) and press Remove button. Press Yes, Restart Now to restart system and repeat the installation instructions given above.
  10. When installation program prompt you, restart Windows NT to make the change effective.


TrackPoint driver installation

  1. Start Windows NT, logon with administrative privilege.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on the Mouse icon.
  5. Click on the General tab.
  6. Click on Change.
  7. Click on Have Disk.
  8. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click on OK button. Then mouse driver list appears.
  9. Select PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  10. Click on OK.
  11. Click on Close in the "Mouse Properties" window.
  12. Go to 'Devices' in 'Control Panel'. If the 'i8042 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse Port' has been disabled, change it back to 'System'. Failure to do this will cause the TrackPoint and keyboard not to function after rebooting.
  13. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.


IDE driver installation
1. Start Windows NT 4.0. Logon with administrative privilege.
2. Extract the driver onto the hard drive.
3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
4. Double click on SCSI Adapters in Control Panel. If you find the following drivers from Drivers tab, remove them.
Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IDE CD-ROM(Atapi 1.2)/Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
5. Click Add....
6. Click Have Disk... in Install Driver screen.
7. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted and click on the OK button. The default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\IDE\.
8. Select the correct driver, and click OK. The driver you have to select is as follows.
ThinkPad PIIX4 IDE Driver: for ThinkPad 560X, 570, 600, and 770 families
9. Restart the computer.

ThinkPad modem driver installation

  1. Start Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click on Start -> Run...
  4. Type in "x:\<path name>\SETUP.EXE". Then click on OK. where x: is the drive letter and <path name> is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen
