Aptiva - 2153 Hangs or errors copying files from CD-ROM Drive

Applicable to: Canada, United States

Symptom:
The system hangs or gives errors when copying files from the CD-ROM drive to another place in the system. This may also occur when installing software to the system from the CD-ROM drive.

Solution:
Separate the CD-ROM and hard drive cables. Perform the following steps:

1. Power down the computer and remove the power cord from it.
2. Remove the computer's cover by removing four Phillips screws attaching the cover to the chassis. The screws are located on the rear of the computer.
3. View the computer from the front. Lay the computer over on its right side. The motherboard and three gray, flat ribbon cables should be clearly visible.
4. Locate the three gray, flat ribbon cables.
5. Cut and remove the white tie wrap from the three flat, gray ribbon cables. Be careful not to cut the ribbon cables.
6. Unplug the power cable from the floppy drive. The power cable is the cable going into the floppy drive that has a small, white connector on it.
7. Lift the topmost ribbon cable, the one with a black connector in the middle of it, and pass the floppy power cable under the flat gray ribbon cable.
8. Carefully plug the floppy drive power cable back into the floppy drive. Make sure that you have plugged it in correctly.
9. Verify that the flat, gray ribbon cables are firmly seated at both ends by pressing on the black connectors located ate each end.
10. Place the computer into an upright position and re-install the cover and four screws.
11. Plug the computer in and power it up.
12. When the Windows 98 desktop is reached, verify the functionality of the floppy drive by inserting a known good floppy and accessing it.
13. The cable separation procedure is complete.

The cables should look like those in this picture:
