TP 310E/ED,315E/ED - Recovering the Preloaded Applications and Device Drivers

If have formated your hard drive and want to start from scratch, you can follow the procedure below to recover your system to a state similar (there will be a few minor differences) to that when it was first pulled out of the box. If you only need help reinstalling drivers or certain preloaded applications, then just follow the procedure outlined for your particular need.

The first step is to reinstall Windows 95 and the necessary device drivers. To do that, follow these simple steps:

1. Important: Create the diskettes for each of the device drivers necessary for Windows 95.
Follow this link if you need instructions on how to do this ().

2. Installing Windows 95
a. Insert the Microsoft Windows 95 CD that came with your computer into the built in CD-ROM drive or into the DISTEC external parallel port CD-ROM drive.
b. Insert the Microsoft CD-ROM Setup Boot Disk that came with your computer into the floppy drive.
c. Turn the computer on and then follow the instructions on the screen to install Windows 95.

3. Installing the display driver
a. Select My Computer, Control Panel, and then System.
b. Click on the Device Manager tab.
c. Click on the + mark for Display adapters; then double-click on (a) Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA) or (b) Chips and Tech. 65550 PCI.
d. Click on the Driver tab; then click on Update Driver.....
e. Insert the Display Driver diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
f. Click on Yes (Recommended) then click on Next.
g. It will come up and say that it has found the following updated driver: Chips and Tech. 65550 PCI; click on Finish; insert the display driver diskette and then click on OK .
h. Type A:\ in the "Copy files from:" dialog box and click OK.
i. After it has finished updating the driver, remove the diskette and click on Yes to restart the computer.

4. Installing the PC Card driver update for Zoomed Video support
a. Insert the Patch Utility diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run...
c. Type A:\PCCARD\PCCARDUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Yes to start updating the necessary files.
e. Click on OK to confirm when the update is complete.

5. Installing audio support drivers
a. Select My Computer, Control Panel, and then System.
b. Click on the Device Manager tab.
c. (a) Click on the + mark for the Other Devices; then double-click on OPL3-SA3 Sound Board, or (b) click on the + mark for Sound, video, and game controllers; then double-click on YAMAHA OPL3-SAx Sound System
d. Click on the Driver tab; then click on Update Driver....
e. Insert the Audio Driver diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ); click on Yes (Recommended) then click on Next.
f. It will come up and say that it has found the following updated driver: YAMAHA OPL3-SAx Sound System; click on Finish; insert the audio driver diskette and then click on OK.
g. Type A:\ in the "Copy files from:" dialog box and click OK.

6) Installing the audio software (Yamaha Station)
a. Insert the Audio Support Software diskette into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type A:\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next to continue; it then prompts you where you would like to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next.
e. It will then prompt you for the folder which you want to add program icons to. To accept the default, click on Next.
f. After it is finished installing, click on OK to continue.

7) Installing Sleep Manager
a. Insert the Sleep Manager Utility diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type A:\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next to continue; it then prompts you where you would like to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next.
e. After it is finished installing, it will say that Sleep Manager is now running; click on OK to continue.

8) Installing Notebook Manager
a. Insert the Notebook Manager Utility diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type A:\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next to continue; it then prompts you where you would like to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next.
e. After it is finished installing, click on OK to continue.

9) Installing SafeOFF
a. Insert the SafeOFF Utility diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (follow this link to obtain the diskette ).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type A:\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next to continue; it then prompts you where you would like to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next.
e. After it is finished installing, click on OK to continue.

10) Installing TDial
a. Insert the Patch Utility diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive (this is the same diskette as used in step 4).
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type A:\TDIAL\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Yes to install the TDial program.
e. Remove the Patch Utility diskette for Windows 95 from the diskette drive and click on Yes to restart the computer.

The next step is to install some of the preloaded applications. To do this, you will need the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD and then follow these steps:

1) Installing Intelliquest Registration Mailer
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\REG210\SETUP.EXE (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Choose the language and click OK; then click on OK again to continue.
e. In then prompts you where you would like it to install. To accept the default, click on OK.
f. Next it prompts you if you would like to create a short cut on the desktop; click on Yes.
g. It then prompts you if you would like to register now and you can select Yes or No.

2) Installing the ThinkPad Customization ICON
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\TPCUST\INSTALL.BAT (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK
d. after it has finished installing, close the window.

3) Installing Anti-Virus Version 2.5.2
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\IBMAV\DISK1\SETUP.EXE (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next to continue; then click on Install.
e. It then prompts you where you would like to install it. To accept the default, click on Next.
f. Select either Custom or Express install (Express is the default and is recommended for most users) and click on Next.
g. It then prompts you where you want to install the application. To accept the default click on Install.
h. When it prompts you to insert disk 2, just click on OK and it will continue with the installation.
i. When it has finished installation, click on OK.

4) Installing Lotus SmartSuite 97
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\LOTUSSS\INSTALL (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Select the language and then click on Next.
e. Verify name and company information and then click on Next; then click on Yes.
f. It then prompts you where you would like to install the application. To accept the default, click on Next.
g. Select all the SmartSuite applications you want to install then click on Next to continue.
h. Select the one of the install options listed, and then click on Next to continue.
i. It then prompts you which Program Folder you would like for the icons. To accept the defaults, click on Next; then click on Yes to continue.
j. After it has finished installing click on Done; you can then register now by clicking on Next, or to register later, click on Exit.

5) Installing the ThinkPad Demo
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\DEMO\SETUP.EXE (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. Click on Next; click on Next again to continue.
e. It then prompts you where you would like to install the demo. To accept the default, click on Next.
f. After it has finished installing, you can select to have the computer restart now or you can restart it later; after selecting, click on Finish.

6) Installing Ergonomics
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\ERGONOMI\ERGO.BAT (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. After it has finished installing, close the window.

7) Installing PointCast Version 1.6
a. Insert the IBM ThinkPad 310E/ED Preload Application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Click on Start; then click on Run....
c. Type X:\POINTCST\THINKPAD.EXE (where X is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive) in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
d. It then prompts you where you would like to install the application. To accept the default, click on OK.
