2.1GB Hard Drives - BIOS update needed for various 755 and 760 ThinkPads

Applicable to: World-Wide

Before installing this Hard Disk Drive in your ThinkPad System, please make sure that the BIOS Date of your ThinkPad is the SAME AS or LATER THAN the date listed for your ThinkPad model in the 'Fix' section below. Otherwise, a small amount (8KB) of your data could be overwritten and lost under the following circumstances:

- Hibernation is Enabled, and
- There is data present on the last cylinder of the Hard Disk Drive, and
- The ThinkPad actually enters Hibernation mode by pressing Fn-Fl2 or by customized power management options.

Note: The problem does not occur when creating the Hibernation file. It only occurs when the ThinkPad actually enters Hibernation mode.

ThinkPad Systems Affected:
Any of the following ThinkPad models may experience this problem under the circumstances above:
760E/ED/EL/ELD
760C/CD/L/LD
755CD/CE/CSE/CDV/CV/CX

Note: The following ThinkPad systems are NOT affected and do NOT require a BIOS update:
755C and 755CS

Fix:
To prevent the possibility of data being overwritten while entering Hibernation mode, please update the ThinkPad's BIOS with the System Program Service Diskette (included in this shipment) to the following levels before installing this Hard Disk Drive:

ThinkPad 760E/ED/EL/ELD with SVGA (800 x 600) LCD ==> Version 1.05 (BIOS Date 12/11/96) or later

To Determine if Your ThinkPad Needs Updating
To check the level of the BIOS currently in your ThinkPad, do the following:
1. Turn off the computer, and remove any diskette from the diskette drive.
2. Press and hold F1; then turn on the computer. Hold F1 until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
3. On some ThinkPad models, the BIOS Date will be shown on this Easy-Setup main screen. If you see the BIOS Date on this screen, skip to Step 5.
4. Click Config, then Click System Board. The BIOS Date is shown on this screen.
5. If the BIOS date of your ThinkPad is EARLIER THAN the date listed in the 'Fix' section, you will need to update your BIOS. Please read the instructions below for obtaining and applying the update before using your Hard Disk Drive option.

If the BIOS date of your ThinkPad is the SAME AS or LATER THAN the date listed in the 'Fix' section, then you do NOT need to update your BIOS. You do NOT need to apply the update to your ThinkPad.

To Apply the Update
Notes:
1. You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program (BIOS).
2. If your computer is attached to a docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.

Use this procedure to apply the update:
1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
2. Insert the System Program Service Diskette for your ThinkPad Model into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
3. Select 'Read this first...' from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
4. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
5. Select 'Update system program' and follow the instructions on the screen.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

6. If you encounter the warning message below, you do not need to install the BIOS diskette shipped with this option. Do the following to exit the Installation Program. Otherwise, skip to Step 7.

Warning
Continuing with this process will install downlevel system programs than currently installed in the system. If unsure, do not continue.
Do you want to continue?
Press Y(Yes) or N(No).
1) Press N, then F3 to exit.
2) Then remove the System Program Diskette from the diskette drive and press Enter to restart the ThinkPad without updating the BIOS.

After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.

7. Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
8. Press and hold the F I key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select Config, then select Initialize.
11. Select OK to initialize the system.
