TP 310,315 - Using the IBM Host Processor Controlled Modem (FRU 76H2735)

Applicable to: United States

There are two basic issues regarding the use of this modem with the ThinkPad 310/315 systems:
Installation and possible system hangs.

Installation

Please be careful when you install this modem on Windows95 Operating Systems
This modem requires the correct device driver for Windows95. Any of the device drivers included in the original Windows95 will not work with the modem. The diskette in the carton contains the right modem driver. Please follow the instructions in the Installation Guide to install the driver from the diskette.

If you have already installed a wrong driver, please follow the steps detailed below to remove the wrong driver from your system and follow the Installation (User's) Guide to install the correct driver.

To Remove an Incorrect Modem driver
1. Insert the modem card. (for PCMCIA modems your computer can be powered on or off).

2. Go to Windows95 Control Panel, click on the System icon.

3. On the System Property windows, click the Device Manager tab.

4. Double click the Modem icon so that you can see the wrong modem driver icon.

5. Select the driver icon and remove it by clicking Remove button at the bottom of the windows.

6. Click OK to close the System Property windows, remove the PCMCIA card from the system. If you are installing an ISA modem, do not remove the ISA modem.

7. Then, follow the instructions in the Installation Guide to install the correct driver from the diskette.

If you encounter a problem installing this IBM Modem in a Windows95 operating system, the following information may enable you to install the modem.

1. If during installation, the message "The file 'aaaaaaa.bbb' on(Unknown) could not be found." appears in the copying files box on your screen, use the following instructions to continue installation. Note: aaaaaaa.bbb will be a file name that is on the installation diskette. Message may have a name instead of "(Unknown)".

2. The "Copy files from: window will have C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS". Using the pull down menu change this to "A:\" by clicking on A:\ (or type A:\) then click OK.

3. Do the above for each file that Windows95 can not find. For some modems this may be seven files.

4. Windows95 will complete copying the file(s) and return to the main screen.

5. Please remove the diskette from drive a.

6. Restart your computer to complete the installation.

Please check the IBM Bulletin Board (919) 517-0001 area 27 for the latest driver (INF) file for your modem.

If the instructions in the flyers are followed then the modem should install correctly. In some instances after the system is restarted Windows95 will detect additional new hardware. A "New Hardware Found" message box will be displayed with the text "Wave Device for Voice Modem". Following this message box the following dialog box will be displayed:

If you click Cancel at this point you will be asked to install this device driver the next time you restart the system. To keep this from happening press the "Next" button. The following dialog box will be displayed:

Click the "Finish" button on this dialog box.

Note: This modem does not have any voice capabilities. Following the above procedure will not reduce the functionality of the modem in any way.

Possible System Hangs

Once the modem is installed it will operate correctly unless you try to access a system function by pressing a Fn+Fx key combination (where x is a number from 1 to 8 - i.e. Fn+F4). If one of these key combinations is pressed the system will appear to hang (the mouse will move but no applications will respond to keystrokes or mouse button clicks). If this occurs you can restore system operation by ejecting the modem from the PCMCIA slot. Any communications application that was using the modem should then be closed.

This issue is resolved in the latest BIOS release for this ThinkPad. To download the latest BIOS, click here.
