TP General - Warranty policy on customer upgradeable hard drives

Applicable to: World-Wide

A removable hard drive is one that can be interchanged with another hard drive on a frequent basis. For example, you can have one hard drive that you install in the morning for work and then at night you can install another hard drive for home use. Both the hard drive and the hard drive connector on the computer are capable of handling this type of activity.

A customer upgradeable hard drive on the other hand, is a hard drive that can be installed by the customer to increase their current hard disk capacity. The only time the hard drive should be removed is for basic problem determination or to upgrade the hard drive. The hard drive and the hard drive connector on the computer are not capable of handling frequent exchanges of the hard drive.

If a customer installable hard drive is removed and then reinstalled more than twenty times, there is the possibility that the connector on the hard drive or the system board could be damaged. This damage will not be covered under warranty.

Note: this does not mean that the customer has voided the warranty on their ThinkPad. It means that this particular type of damage will not be covered. If the customer is experiencing problems not related to this (LCD problems, keyboard problems, etc...) it will still be covered under warranty.
