TP 390,1720 - Installing DOS and its device drivers

This document describes the installation procedures for DOS Version 7.0 and its device drivers.

Overall Procedure
1. Have the DOS installation package in hand.
2. Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
3. Create the installation diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory program preloaded on the hard disk, or go to the ThinkPad Web site and download the latest hardware driver diskettes. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:

CD-ROM device driver

CD-ROM Driver Diskette for DOS

PC Card support software

CardSoft Software for DOS
Note: If you have already formatted your hard drive you can download the drivers by clicking on the links in the table above.

4. Install DOS and the device driver diskettes.

Installing IBM PC DOS Version 7.0
To install DOS, follow the instructions in the DOS installation manuals.

Installing the ThinkPad Modem Driver for DOS
Note: If you are going to install Windows 3.11, do not install the ThinkPad Modem Driver for DOS. Instead, install the ThinkPad Modem Driver for Windows 3.11.
To install the ThinkPad modem driver for DOS:
1. Start DOS.
2. Type E CONFIG.SYS and press Enter to modify the CONFIG.SYS file.
3. Add the following lines (if not present):
Device=[Path\]HIMEM.SYS /V
Device=[Path\]EMM386.EXE RAM /V

where Path refers to the directory where DOS is installed on your hard disk drive. Note: If you modified the CONFIG.SYS file, restart the computer.
4. Insert the 'ThinkPad Modem Driver Diskette for DOS" into the diskette drive.
5. Type MDMDCD 0 and press Enter.
6. Type LTTSR and press Enter.
7. Type MDMDCD 1 and press Enter.

Installing the Hibernation Utility for DOS
Notes:
If you change the memory size, you need to reinstall the hibernation utility.
If you created a hibernation partition, you need to delete it before recreating a partition.
Note:
To install the hibernation utility for DOS:
1. Insert the Hibernation Utility Diskette into the diskette drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the CD-ROM Device Driver for DOS
To install the CD-ROM device driver for DOS:
1. Start DOS.
2. Insert the "CD-ROM Driver Diskette for DOS" into the diskette drive.
3. Type A:\UINSTALL and press Enter.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Note: For software parameters in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, refer to the README in the CD-ROM Driver Diskette.

Installing the PC Card Support Software for DOS
Notes:
1. If you are going to use a port replicator with your computer, you need to uninstall CardSoft for DOS first, and then reinstall it.
2. If you are going to use CardWizard for Windows 3.11, do not install CardSoft for DOS.

To install the PC Card support software for DOS:
1. Start DOS.
2. Insert the "CardSoft Software for DOS" into the diskette drive.
3. Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
