TP 380XD - Shut Down appears at top of Start Menu

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
On 380XD machines preloaded with Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 4.0, the "Shut Down" icon on the start menu may appear at the top of the window instead of in its default location at the bottom, just above the Start button. This will typically occur when networking software is added, as Internet Explorer 4.0 adds a "Log Off User" icon when the LAN Client software is added. With some versions of the preload, the Start Menu allows only two objects below the first line on the Start Menu, in this case, these 2 items are "Suspend" and "Log Off User".

Configuration:
380XD, Pentium MMX Systems only, the Pentium-II machines have an updated preload with Internet Explorer 4.01, which has fixed the problem of allowing only two items below the line on the start menu. This problem will not be seen unless the Client for Microsoft Networks has been installed by the user, which then adds the "Log Off User" icon to the start menu. This forces the "Shut Down" icon to the top.

Solution:
There is a workaround, which is quick and easy to implement. It is easiest to remove the "Suspend" icon
from the Start Menu and simply use Fn +F4 to suspend the system when a manual suspend is desired. To
remove the suspend Icon do the following:
1) From the Start Menu, select Settings, Control Panel, then select Power.
2) Select the Power tab and click on the button marked "Advanced"
3) Clear the check-box next to, "Show suspend command on Start Menu"
4) Click Apply, and the suspend object is no longer displayed.

The permanent fix is to install the update to Internet Explorer available from the Microsoft Corporation Web Site BAD DOCLINK - to update Internet Explorer to version 4.01 or later.
