TP 380,385 - Getting a VFAT error message after upgrading to Windows 98

SYMPTOM:
After the Windows 98 Setup program has detected and configured all hardware devices on your computer, the following error message may appear on your screen:

"VFAT Device Initialization Failed"
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable.
VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 380,385 where you are upgrading Windows 95 to Windows 98.

SOLUTION:
In the Windows 98 Upgrade Information document for the ThinkPad 380,385 it recommends that you uninstall CardWorks before upgrading to Windows 98 to prevent this error message. If this message appears on your screen, please perform the following steps provided below to recover from this problem. This problem arises due to Windows 98 trying to load certain drivers needed for the SystemSoft CardWorks application. 1. Power off and restart your machine.
2. The next time you restart your machine, the "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" will appear on your screen.
3. Select or highlight "Safe mode" and press 'ENTER'.
4. Click on [OK] to verify Windows 98 is running in safe mode.
5. To manually remove the SystemSoft CardWorks application from your computer, please follow the steps provided below:

j. Remove all CardWorks related drivers for the config.sys file. Open C:\config.sys in a text editor, e.g., NOTEPAD. Delete those lines that refer to the CardWorks directory. Save the updated file, and close the text editor.

Note: The letter (C:) is the drive designation where your system's current/active config.sys file is located.

k. Remove CardWorks from the start directory by clicking: Start => Settings => TaskBar & Start Menu...
l. Click on the 'Start Menu Programs' tab.
m. Click on the [Remove...] button.
n. Next, highlight the "CardWorks" entry and click on the [Remove] button. Confirm you want to remove this entry.
o. Click on [Close] of the "Remove Shortcuts/Folder" window, then click on [OK] on the "Taskbar Properties" window.
p. Restart your computer.
q. SystemSoft CardWorks is now removed from your computer.

6. The next time you restart your computer, Windows 98 will automatically start in 'Normal' mode.

If the above VFAT error doesn't occur on your 380x/385x ThinkPad model, please follow the instructions provided below to uninstall the SystemSoft CardWorks application from your ThinkPad under Windows 98:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Programs => MS-DOS Prompt.
3. At the prompt, type copy c:\windows\inf\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\temp, then press 'Enter'.
4. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel. Double-click on 'Add/ Remove Programs' icon.
5. Select "SystemSoft CardWorks" and click the [Add/Remove...] button. Follow the instructions on screen to restart your computer.
6. Click: Start => Programs => MS-DOS Prompt.
7. At the prompt, type copy c:\windows\temp\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\inf, then press 'Enter'.
8. Type 'y' and press 'Enter' to overwrite the file.
9. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel. Double-click on the 'System' icon, the click on the 'Device Manager' tab.
10. Locate the 'PCMCIA socket' and click '+' mark to expand it.
11. Select each 'Texas Instruments PCI - 1250 CardBus Controller' listed under 'PCMCIA socket' and click on [Remove].
12. Shutdown and restart your computer.
13. The 'Add New Hardware Wizard' will appear and will detect the PCMCIA controller. Follow the defaults by clicking [Next] for each dialog box that appears on your screen.
14. When the dialog appears with the [Finish] button, click [Finish].
15. Click [Yes] to restart your computer.
16. If the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' appears again follow the instructions as per steps 12, 13 and 14.
17. "SystemSoft CardWorks" is now uninstalled.
