TP 770/E/ED - Cannot play DVD movies using SoftDVD after installing MPEG drivers

SYMPTOM:
After installing the MPEG driver MPTPDW98.EXE or MPTPCW95.EXE, DVD movies will no longer play using the SoftDVD application. When attempting to play a DVD movie, the error MPEGVIDEO Device could not be opened. Abort! appears and is then followed by the error DVD drive not ready or drive empty.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 770/E/ED running Windows 95/98 using the SoftDVD application to play DVD movies and has recently updated the MPEG drivers using the file MPTPDW98.EXE or MPTPCW95.EXE.

SOLUTION:
This version of the MPEG drivers is NOT for use with those ThinkPad 770's that are using the SoftDVD application to play DVD movies. To recover from this scenario, follow the procedures outlined below:

1. Download the correct MPEG drivers for the SoftDVD application. To download the latest version, click here. After downloading, make sure you run the file to extract the image to a floppy disk.
2. Click on Start ==> Settings ==> Control Panel ==> System ==> Device Manager.
3. Go to the section titled Sound, video and game controllers.
4. Find the device labelled IBM MPEG2 Decoder Card, and click on it once to highlight it and then click on Properties.
5. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update driver.
6. When prompted, select the option to select the driver from a list and then click Next.
7. You should see two devices listed (IBM MPEG2 Decoder Card, and IBM MCI MPEG 1/2 Decoder). Click on IBM MCI MPEG 1/2 Decoder and then click on Finish.
8. When prompted, insert the MPEG features diskette that was just created and click on OK. If prompted, change the location of where the files are being copied from to A:\ and then click on OK.
9. It will state that the version of allnode.dll that is currently installed on your system is later that the version being installed and will ask if you want to keep this file. Select Yes.
10. After the installation is complete, click on Close, and then Close again to exit out of Device Manager.
11. Restart the computer.
12. After the computer has restarted, reinstall the Region Country Code diskette for your region.
13. Restart the computer.

At this point, DVD movies should play correctly using the SoftDVD application.
