TP 760E/ED - Cannot use the Mwave modem on COM 1 in SelectaDock docking stations

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
If you disable the serial port and the IR port on the ThinkPad, the Mwave modem is automatically configured to COM 1 by Windows 95/98 and it will not work when installed in a SelectaDock docking station.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 760E/ED running Windows 95/98 in a SelectaDock I, II, or III where the Mwave modem is configured for COM 1.

SOLUTION:
You can disable the plug and play capability of the Mwave modem in Windows 95/98 so that the Mwave modem will stay at COM 2 even if there is no active device enabled on COM 1. To do this, follow the procedure outlined below:

1. First, ensure that you are at the latest version of the System BIOS and the ThinkPad Configuration Utility. To download the latest drivers, follow the links below:
System BIOS (for SVGA systems)
System BIOS (for XGA systems)
ThinkPad Utility Disks

2. Through the ThinkPad Configuration Utility, ensure that both the serial port and the infrared port are disabled.
3. In Device Manager, double-click on Mwave Communications Port under the Ports (COM & LPT) section.
4. Click on the Resources tab.
5. Click in the box next to Use automatic settings to remove the X.
6. Change the Basic Configuration to something other than Basic Configuration 0001 (it does not matter what you change it to as you will be changing this setting again shortly).
7. Click on OK. You will receive a notice saying that You have adjusted one or more settings manually. Click on Yes.
8. Click on OK, and when prompted if you want to restart your computer, say No.
9. Open Device Manager again and repeat steps 3 and 4.
10. For Basic Configuration, change the setting back to Basic Configuration 0001.
11. Click OK. When you receive the notice saying that You have adjusted one or more settings manually, click on Yes to continue.
12. Close Device Manager, and when prompted if you want to restart your computer, say Yes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
If you are having a difficult time in getting Windows 95/98 to configure the COM ports correctly, it may be necessary to start from the very beginning. The procedure outlined below includes initializing your system BIOS as well as deleting your current docked configuration. If you have installed any devices in your docking station, or have changed system settings on your ThinkPad to allow for the use of other devices (such as PC Cards), you will need to reconfigure your ThinkPad system settings and any devices that you may have attached to the ThinkPad or installed in the docking station. You may want to backup your current registry settings before proceeding.

1. Right click on My Computer.
2. Select Properties.
3. Select Hardware Profiles tab.
4. Highlight the docked configuration and select the delete button.
5. Select the Device Manager tab.
6. Scroll to the Ports (COM & LPT) section.
7. Highlight and then click on Remove for the first three COM ports one at a time. They will be your infrared port, serial port, and Mwave communications port. When asked if you want to restart the computer, say No. After you remove the last COM port from Device Manager, shutdown Windows 95/98 so that it powers off your computer.
8. Hold down the F1 key while you power on the computer. From the EZSetup menu, click on Cofing ==> Initialize ==> OK. Then click on Exit ==> Restart ==> OK.
9. When Windows 95/98 starts, the COM ports that were removed earlier will be added back. Follow the prompts on the screen.
10. After Windows 95/98 finishes configuring the COM ports go to the Ports (COM & LPT) section in Device Manager. You should see a listing that says Mwave Communications Port (COM 2). Double-click on it and follow the instructions in steps 4-11 under the SOLUTIONS section.
11. Close Device Manager, and when prompted if you want to restart your computer, say No.
12. Go to the ThinkPad Configuration Utility, click on the Infrared icon and select Disable. Your serial port should already be disabled but you will want to double check it.
13. Reboot and if you check Device Manager, your serial port and infrared ports will be disabled and your modem will be at COM 2.
14. Put the ThinkPad into the SelectaDock and let Windows 95/98 create the docking configuration automatically. No additional configuration should be necessary for the modem from here as the modem should stay at COM 2 and the serial and infrared ports remain disabled.

Once the above configuration works, you can then begin to reconfigure any additional devices you installed in the ThinkPad or SelectaDock docking station.
