PURPOSE:
During service contact prevent and / or correct an internal speaker distorted sound or no sound condition.

This ECA is to be implemented World Wide!
The repair policy for this ECA is "Fix On Fail".

Note: The effective date of this ECA is 12/98.

PHYSICAL CHECK:
Any of the following conditions allow for ECA implementation:

o Sound produced by one or both of the internal speakers is missing or distorted at moderate volume settings.
o The BIOS level is below version 1.24
o The Windows 95/98 Audio Driver is below version 4.05.2338.
o The Audio Support Program is below 1.06E or below.

System Program Verification Information
The BIOS Version can be found in System Information which is displayed by pressing the Fn+F6 key combination during normal operation. Press "Page Down" to page 2/2 then view the "SYS BIOS VERSION" to determine what level of BIOS the Thinkpad is. The list below will assist you in determining the BIOS versions up to 1.24. The (*) shows the minimum level required for this ECA.

DETAIL:
On service contact perform the following:

1. Update the BIOS to version 1.24 or later.
2. Update the Audio Driver for Windows 95/98 to version 4.05.2338 or later.
3. Update the Audio Support Program to version 1.06E or later.

ALSO

Replace speakers that are not producing any sound or producing a distorted sound at moderate volume levels. NOTE: The speakers are contained in the Chassis Assembly FRU P/N05K7071.

NOTES:
This ECA will expire 12/31/99.
Order all FRU parts locally, and record Time & Materials to service code 33, ECA003 and OTHER OFFICE 990.

This ECA is Non-Billable as long as it is Active.

EMEA CLAIM INFORMATION:
IBM PSS CE's should record all time and parts to Service Code 33, (2600) ECA003, Other Office 990.
