Missing device drivers at AIX levels 4.1.5 and 4.2.1
The following steps describe how to download the GXT120P drivers from
the ftp site: ftp://service.software.ibm.com/aix/efixes/gxt120P
These instructions will allow you to create two disks.
- The GXT120P installation/boot disk which is
created from the GXT120P.dd.Z file.
- The
GXT120P drivers diskette which is created from
the devices.pci.2b101a05 file.
NOTE: If you do not already have two formatted floppy disks, format
two disks with the format command.
- Creating the Boot Disk GXT120P.dd.Z
- Download the GXT120P.dd.Z file from the ftp site.
You may need to hold down the shift key and
click on the file to download.
- Once it is saved to the destination directory, check
to see if the file is compressed, which is indicated by
the Z on the end of the filename. If the file is NOT compressed, enter:
compress GXT120P.dd
You should now have a GXT120P.dd.Z file.
- Insert a formatted floppy disk and enter:
compress -dc GXT120P.dd.Z | dd of=/dev/rfd0 obs=36b
The preceding command will put the necessary files on the floppy disk.
You now have the installation disk which is needed when
the machine is reinstalled at 4.1.5 or 4.2.1, or when you
boot into service mode from a CD.
- Creating a disk with the drivers devices.pci.2b201a05
- Download devices.pci.2b101a05 to a
local directory.
- Enter the following:
tar -cvf /dev/fd0 devices.pci.2b101a05
The preceding command will tar the files on the floppy disk.
- Enter the following:
tar -xvf /dev/fd0
The preceding command will expand the files and put them in the
current directory.
- Enter:
inutoc .
This command will create a table of contents in the directory, which is needed
for SMIT.
- Enter
smitty installp
- After the SMIT dialog screen appears, accomplish the following steps:
- Select:
Install/Update From All Avail Software
- Select:
Input device/directory [.]
- Select:
Software to Install --> F4 to list
After completing the preceding steps, you should be able to see
device.pci.2b101a05
.
XWindows fails after applying fixes
-
On AIX level 4.2.1, after installing either of the following filesets,
the Xserver will not work after a reboot.
- U456829 - devices.pci.2b101a05.rte.4.2.1.3
- U459057 - devices.pci.2b101a05.rte.4.3.1.2
A temporary workaround is to reject the fix and reboot.
The fix follows:
- APAR IX83625 devices.pci.2b101a05.X11 4.2.1.7
- On AIX level 4.3.1, after installing the following fileset,
the Xserver will not work after a reboot.
- devices.pci.2b101a05.rte.4.3.1.2
A temporary workaround is to reinstall the GXT120P device
drivers to base level 4.3.1.0 from install
media.
The fix is to install the following drivers at the 4.3.2.x level.
Order APAR IX83793
- devices.pci.2b101a05.X11.4.3.2.0
- devices.pci.2b101a05.diag.4.3.2.0
- devices.pci.2b101a05.rte.4.3.2.1
GXT120P and P Series Monitors Power Management
The monitor has to be manually turned on after DPMS has shut
it off due to loss of sync after Display Power Management is
initiated.
A workaround follows:
- Power off/on the monitor when the problem occurs
- Disable the power management on the system
To fix the problem, order APAR IX82645 for AIX 4.2.
