TP 770X - Upgrading to Windows 2000 Beta 3 over Windows NT 4.0

  1. Flash the ThinkPad BIOS to the most current level available on the IBM support web page.
  2. Restore the original Windows 4.0 preload for best upgrade results.
  3. Logon onto NT with administrator password and ID.
  4. Install Windows NT SP3 or 4 as required.
  5. Uninstall TrackPoint Support in Add/Remove Programs.
  6. Uninstall ThinkPad utilities for Windows NT via Add/Remove Software.
  7. Uninstall ACP modem software via ThinkPad DSP icon in Control Panel.
  8. Uninstall Norton AntiVirus Software in Add/Remove Programs.
  9. Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-ROM drive and when prompted, click Yes to upgrade the system.
  10. Click Upgrade to Windows 2000, and click Next to continue.
  11. Click Accept to agree the EULA and click Next to continue.
  12. Click No, do not upgrade the drive to NTFS file system, and click Next to continue.
  13. The Windows 2000 Setup file loads and prompts a warning for service to be disabled. Systemsoft cardworks must be uninstalled prior to continuing the upgrade. Click OK to remove the software and restart the machine.
  14. Cardworks removal dialog box appears, click Next to end the setup and restart the machine.
  15. Several more screen dialog boxes appear with reference to IBM power management being disabled, the setup does not allow for user intervention. The system will reboot.
  16. Repeat steps 9 through 13 with user input as required.
  17. Now there is a dialog box concerning IBM power management being disabled with user intervention, click Ok to continue.
  18. Click Next, and the machine reboots and begins the DOS based file copy process.
  19. After the file copy process has ended, the system reboots and a new line is added to the boot.ini menu. The Windows 2000 setup is chosen by default and the setup continues.
  20. Setup will examine the hard disks (scandisk) and continue with file copy process.
  21. The Windows 2000 setup wizard continues.
  22. The installing devices screen appears with scrolling indicator bar.
  23. A dialog box with Digital Signature not found, the device is the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint driver, click Yes to continue.
  24. Insert the floppy disk containing the updated TrackPoint driver and click OK at the prompt for added files needed.
  25. The screen will flicker during the installing devices phase.
  26. File copy process will occur for several minutes.
  27. Setup completes its final set of tasks, the start menu items, registry components, saving the configurations settings and deletes any temporary files.
  28. Setup finishes its tasks and reboots.
  29. Log into Windows 2000 if prompted.
  30. Modem Audio Device Detection occurs via Add New Hardware.
  31. Wait patiently until Desktop stabilizes.
  32. Close Getting started Window, click Never show again if desired.
  33. Click at Save and Close of ThinkPad Modem update Reminder.
  34. Click Next at Found New Hardware Wizard
  35. Click Next at Modem Audio Device, making sure that check by floppy drive is removed.
  36. Click Finish at final Wizard screen.
  37. If no audio is heard, find wav audio file and play. If no audio is still heard, disable the Modem Audio Device in Device Manager, clicking No to restarting.
  38. Close all open windows and shut down the machine. Cold boot required.


ThinkPad Configuration Installation

  1. Insert the ThinkPad utility diskette 1 into the floppy drive and click Start, Run.
  2. Type A:\SETUP on the Run command line, and press Enter.
  3. Click Next at the Welcome screen.
  4. Click Next to accept the default subdirectory for the ThinkPad utilities.
  5. Click Custom install method and click Next to continue.
  6. Remove the check mark by Personalization Editor and click Next.
  7. Click Next to accept the default ThinkPad group.
  8. ThinkPad utility file copy process begins.
  9. Remove and insert the required diskettes as prompted. The diskette insertion prompt will ask for the Win98 diskettes, use the Windows 2000 diskettes.
  10. The utility data diskette is machine specific, please use the correct one.
  11. ThinkPad utility install will complete and ask to restart the machine, select No, I will restart later. Then click Finish, and then remove the data diskette.
  12. Close ThinkPad configuration, shutdown and restart the machine.


ThinkPad TrackPoint 4 mouse driver installation

  1. Extract the drivers to the hard drive. The default directory the files are extracted to is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT.
  2. Open Mouse icon in Control Panel
  3. Select Hardware tab and click Properties.
  4. Click Driver tab and click Update driver, the upgrade device wizard will start, click Next to continue.
  5. Ensure that search for suitable driver is selected and click Next to continue.
  6. Remove all check marks shown and ensure that only Specify a location is checked and click Next to continue.
  7. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT in the dialog box and click Next to install the resultant driver MSMOUSE.INF.
  8. Click Yes to accept the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint driver.
  9. Mouse driver file copy occurs, click Finish to end install.
  10. Click No to restart computer now.
  11. Close all open windows and shutdown Windows 2000 and restart.
  12. Open Mouse icon in Control Panel and select the TrackPoint tab to customize the TrackPoint mouse features.
