TP 390,1720 - Installing Windows NT 4.0 and its device drivers

This section describes the installation procedures for Windows NT Workstation Version 4.0 and its device drivers.

Overall Procedure
1. Have the Windows NT installation package in hand.
2. Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
3. Create the installation diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory program preloaded on the hard disk. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:

4. Install Windows NT and the software.

Installing Microsoft Windows NT
Before installing Windows NT, do the following:
- Read the Windows NT installation guide.

If you plan to use OS/2 Warp with Windows NT, you need to use the OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, read Installing Software for OS/2 Warp.

You can install Windows NT using the internal CD-ROM drive. You can also install Windows NT using a network server. You can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server. After connecting your computer to a network, such as with the DOS LAN requester, you can install the files from the network server to your computer at the DOS command prompt.

Installing the Display Driver for Windows NT

  1. Boot Windows NT 4.0. Logon with the Administrator password.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click on the Start button.
  4. Move the cursor to the Settings then click on the Control Panel.
  5. Double-click on the Display icon.
  6. Select on the Settings tab.
  7. Click on the Display Type... button.
  8. Click on the Change... button.
  9. Click on the Have Disk... button.
  10. Type C:\DRIVERS\WNT\VIDEO in the source path and then click on the OK button.
  11. Windows NT finds NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV then click on the OK button.
  12. Click on the Yes button to confirm that you are installing a third-party driver.
  13. Click on the Close button to close the Display Type window.
  14. Click on the Close button to close the Display Properties window.
  15. Click on the Yes button, and restart the computer to make the driver effective.
  16. Click on the OK button, when the Invalid Display Settings message appears.
  17. Display Properties window appears. Select your screen parameter from the color palette, desktop area, and refresh frequency.
  18. Click on the Test button, and make sure the selected mode is displayed correctly on the screen.
  19. Click on the OK button in the Display Properties window.


If you want to use an external monitor with the computer, go to Using the display driver for an external monitor. If not, go to Installing the audio device driver for Windows NT.

Using the display driver for an external monitor
If you are attaching an external monitor to the computer do the following.

  1. Start Windows NT. When the "OS Loader V4.00" window appears, prompting you to select the operating system, change the screen to CRT-only mode by pressing the Fn+F7 key combination.
  2. Log on to Windows NT with the user ID authorized as an administrator. Windows NT starts on the CRT screen.
  3. Double-click on My Computer, Control Panel, and Display.
  4. In the "Display Properties" window, click on the Settings tab.
  5. Click on List All Modes..., and select the resolution, color depth, and refresh frequency.
  6. Click on Test and make sure the selected mode is displayed correctly on the screen.
  7. Click on OK or Apply to make the change effective.


Hint
If you are using Windows NT, you can create different video mode configuration profiles, such as one for the LCD mode and another one for the External Display mode. For more details about the hardware profile settings, read the Windows NT user's guide.

Installing the Audio Device Driver for Windows NT
To install the audio device driver for Windows NT:

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0. Logon with the Administrator level access
  2. Extract the Audio Features Package for Windows NT 4.0 onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Multimedia .
  4. Click on the Devices tab.
  5. Click on the Add... button.
  6. Select Unlisted or Updated Driver and then click on OK .
  7. Type C:\drivers\wnt\audio and click on OK .
  8. Select NeoMagic MagicWave 3DX . Then, click on OK .
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  10. Shutdown and restart the computer.


Installing the ThinkPad Modem Driver for Windows NT
To install the ThinkPad Modem driver for Windows NT:

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0. Logon with the administrator password.
  2. Extract the Modem Driver Diskette for Windows NT 4.0 onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Run...
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WNT\MODEM\SETUP and click on OK .
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.


Configuring the ThinkPad Modem for Windows NT
After installing the ThinkPad Modem software, you can configure the ThinkPad Modem by assigning a communication port (COM port):

  1. Double-click on My Computer, Control Panel, and Ports. Specify the necessary settings in the window for "LT WinModem".
  2. Click on OK.
  3. Restart the computer to make the changes effective.


Next, add ThinkPad Modem in the Control Panel so that you can use communication applications that use the Unimodem facility of Windows NT, such as HyperTerminal or Dial-Up Networking:

1. Double-click on My Computer, Control Panel, and Modems.
2. Do the following:

Windows NT searches for the modem.
If successful, Windows NT reports that it has found a modem of type "LT WinModem.". If Windows NT fails to detect a modem, verify that your communication port was configured. Remember that the changes you make do not take effect until you restart Windows NT.
4. Click on Next and follow the instructions on the screen.
You should be able to use your ThinkPad Modem with all the modem communication applications supported by Windows NT.


Installing the TrackPoint Driver for Windows NT
To install the TrackPoint driver for Windows NT:

  1. Start Windows NT. Logon with administrative privilege.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on the Mouse icon.
  5. Click on the General tab.
  6. Click on Change.
  7. Click on Have Disk.
  8. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click on OK button. Then mouse driver list appears.
  9. Select PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  10. Click on OK.
  11. Click on Close in the "Mouse Properties" window.
  12. Go to Devices in Control Panel. If the 'i8042 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse Port' has been disabled, change it back to 'System'. Failure to do this will cause the TrackPoint and keyboard not to function after rebooting.
  13. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.


Installing the PC Card Support Software for Windows NT
To install the PC Card support software for Windows NT:
1. Start Windows NT. Logon with Administrator access.
2. Select File from the "Program Manager" window; then select Run... from the pull-down menu.
3. Insert the "CardWizard Software for Windows NT" into the diskette drive.
4. Type A:\SETUP and press Enter.
Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the APM Support Software for Windows NT
To install Advanced Power Management (APM) support for Windows NT:

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0. Logon with Administrator access.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click Start -> Run...
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WNT\APM\SETUP and click on OK .
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
